– The latest IDC numbers indicate that worldwide smartphone shipments surpassed 1 billion for the first time, with Android and iOS accounting for 93.8% of those shipments for the year.  Breaking the numbers down by operating system, Android almost walked away with 800 million shipments (793.6M) to control 78.6% of the market share, up from 2012’s share of 69.0%.  iOS saw overall shipments increase to 153.4 million, but they saw a dip in overall market share to 15.2% from 2012’s share of 18.7%.  Windows Phone saw the third highest number of shipments, reaching 33.4 million to control 3.3%.  BlackBerry came in fourth with just 19.2 million units to control 1.9%, down from last year’s third place position of 4.5%.  (link)

– Lenovo saw a 30% increase in profits when reporting its Q3 numbers, boosted by strong PC and smartphone sales in China.  The company reported net profits of $265.3 million on revenue of $10.8 billion, up 15% YOY.  The company shipped a record 32.6 million devices – breaking down to 15.3 million PCs (with an 18.5% market share) and 17.3 million smartphones and tablets.  Looking ahead, the company did warn that their recent purchases of Motorola Mobility and the IBM server division, could impact its profitability for at least two quarters.  (link)

– New stats from Incapsula suggest that humans account for only 38.5% of all the global web traffic.  Search engines and good bots account for another 31%, leaving the remaining 30.5% to be shared between content scrapers, hacking tools, spam bots, and other bad non-human traffic.  (link)

– Mobile enterprise software vendor Good Technology’s latest numbers indicate that the iPad accounted for 91.4% of all enterprise tablet activations in Q4, while Android only accounted for 8.6%.  Breaking down the demographics, the financial services industry appears to love the iPad the most, accounting for 46.8% of all activations, followed by professional services (13.9%), manufacturing (9.4%) and government or public sector (9.0%).  (link)

– BlackBerry Messenger pushed out new updates yesterday adding new functionality for users to make free voice calls to BBM contacts over Wi-Fi or mobile connection.  Further, users can now easily share files or location with other BBM members.  (link)
